Who is Kate Capshaw?
Kathleen Spielberg, better known as Kate Capshaw, is an American actress perhaps best known for her role as Willie Scott in the 1984 film “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. Born on 3 November 1953, in Fort Worth, Texas, she began her acting career in the early 1980s, having prior to that worked as a special education teacher. Her other notable film credits include “Black Rain” (1989) and “Love Affair” (1994).
She is also widely recognized for being the wife of renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, whom she met during the filming of “Indiana Jones”. Kate retired from acting in the early 2000s, but has remained a prominent figure in Hollywood through her marriage to Spielberg.
Early Life and Education
Kate had a fairly ordinary childhood – raised in St. Louis, Missouri, she’s the daughter of an airline employee and a travel agent. Although she is now known for her career in Hollywood, her earliest ambitions were directed towards education rather than the silver screen. Kate graduated from the University of Missouri with an education degree, specializing in special education, and worked as a teacher focusing on children with learning difficulties.
Before the Fame
While Kate’s teaching career was fulfilling, she felt an irresistible pull towards the creative arts. She began taking acting classes at night, fostering a passion that would soon take center stage in her life. After several years of teaching, Kate took a leap of faith, leaving her teaching job to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She relocated to New York City, the hub of acting opportunities, where she hoped her talent and drive would be noticed.
There, she enrolled in the prestigious Actors Studio to further refine her acting skills, meanwhile taking up modeling to support herself financially.
Before moving to New York, Kate was married to marketing manager Robert Capshaw from 1976 to 1980; the two have a daughter together, Jessica. Following the divorce, Kate continued using her ex-husbands last name professionally.
Acting Career
Kate made her acting debut in 1981, in the popular daytime drama series “The Edge of Night”, appearing as Jinx Avery in 32 episodes of the show. Her first film role came a year later, in the romantic comedy “A Little Sex”, in which she starred opposite Tim Matheson.

The role that catapulted Kate to fame was her performance as Willie Scott, in Steven Spielberg’s adventure film, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). Kate played the glamorous nightclub singer who ends up accompanying Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, on his journey. Despite the film’s mixed reviews, her performance was widely appreciated, and opened the door for Kate towards more acting opportunities.
In the same year, Kate starred in “Dreamscape”, a science fiction film directed by Joseph Ruben. She played Jane DeVries, a research scientist who becomes involved in a government project dealing with entering and influencing people’s dreams.
In 1989, Kate appeared in Ridley Scott’s action thriller “Black Rain”, starring Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia and Ken Takakura. The plot follows two New York City police officers, Nick Conklin (Douglas) and Charlie Vincent (Garcia), who arrest a member of the Yakuza – the infamous Japanese mafia – and are assigned to escort him back to Japan. Although Kate’s screentime in the film was limited, she was praised for adding a dash of romance into a predominantly action-packed film.
Another notable film role for Kate was in the legal drama “Just Cause” (1995), which also starred Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne; she played Laurie Armstrong, the wife of Connery’s character.
In the same year, Kate appeared in one of her rare TV roles in the comedy mini-series “Black Tie Affair”, in which she played the lead role of Margo Cody, a private detective investigating a philandering tycoon.
One of her last significant roles before retiring from acting was in “The Love Letter” (1999), a romantic comedy-drama. Kate played Helen, the owner of a bookstore who discovers an anonymous love letter. This film was a departure from her previous roles, as she successfully portrayed a character caught in a whirlwind of romance and mystery.
In 2002, Kate made her last film appearance with a starring role in the drama “Due East”.
Marriage with Steven Spielberg
Kate and Steven’s professional collaboration blossomed into a personal relationship, and the couple married on 12 October 1991. Before marrying Steven, Kate was a member of the Episcopalian church, but later converted to Judaism. The couple had both a civil and an Orthodox Jewish ceremony.
The union brought together Spielberg’s son from his first marriage and Kate’s daughter from her previous marriage, and together, they had five more children, creating a large blended family. Having been together for more than three decades, Kate and Steven have one of the longest-lasting relationships in Hollywood.
Where is She Now?
Since retiring from acting, Kate has been enjoying a quieter life out of the limelight, focusing her energy on her family, raising her children, and philanthropic efforts. She’s involved in various charities and advocacy groups, and has used her platform to support causes close to her heart, such as special education and children’s welfare. She and Spielberg also engage in numerous philanthropic activities through the Righteous Persons Foundation, which they founded.
In 2009, Kate began her art studies, and her paintings have since been a part of numerous exhibitions across the US. She’s particularly known for her portraits, which often depict people coming from differing backgrounds, and raise awareness of social issues.
Kate’s decision to step back from acting hasn’t diminished her influence in Hollywood. She frequently accompanies Spielberg to premieres and award ceremonies, and is an influential figure in the film industry, largely due to her relationship.
Net Worth
As of July 2023, Kate’s net worth is estimated to be more than $100 million, a testament to her successful acting career. However, this pales in comparison to her husband Steven Spielberg’s estimated net worth of $4 billion, making them one of Hollywood’s wealthiest couples.
